Our Winchester branch is in Jewry Street, two or three minutes walk from the main shopping centre and the frontage is so narrow, you could be forgiven for missing it.
Funnily enough, when we first saw the premises, everyone was convinced that it was too narrow to fit in two cashier positions, plus a door to access the working area behind them.
However, a bit of "archaeology" revealed a small area that had obviously been walled off for many years, an area just big enough to accomodate an entrance, via a quaint arch, to a vestibule and a door.
Having served as a charity bookshop for some while, the interior was a bit of a mess, as was the shop front itself, but after several weeks of loving care from our own building team, we came up with a finished branch that we think really relates to the "olde worlde" feeling that is historical Winchester.
Although narrow at the front and, in some respects, a bit tucked away, our Winchester branch has steadily made its mark on the area and is now extremely popular with a growing number of customers.
Incidentally, the two nearest pubs are not quite opposite (see Waterlooville page), but there IS a licensed Chinese restaurant in the basement directly below us, which is open at lunch times, as well as during the evenings.
